HEET sure is cheap. $2 or less for 12 fluid ounces. By comparison 750 ml (a little over 25 fl oz) of rectified alcohol (Everclear) will cost $13-15. The most accessible pure ethanol fuel is Everclear 151, a grain alcohol that’s about 75% ethanol by volume. It’s a drinkable spirit alcohol and can burn, but is difficult to ignite and takes a long time to boil water. Everclear 190 would be better, with 95% alcohol by volume, but it’s not legal to sell in my state, California.

Denatured Alcohol is second best. It burns almost as hot and not as clean, but is a bit cheaper. It can be a bit harder to find. WebA couple of things I've learned about alcohol stoves. Number one, bring everclear instead of denatured alcohol. If you like to drink you can mix the everclear with a sports drink mix and you won't have to carry a separate supply of alcohol for drinking. Also you can use it for disinfecting a wound, which I wouldn't recommend with poisoned alcohol.
